Spherical cutters with maximum material removal

When it‘s a matter of highly abrasive or other high-tech materials, machinists want the best – diamond. And they know why. Diamond-coated tools achieve optimum performance with top efficiency. One example of this are the new spherical cutters from Voha-Tosec Werkzeuge GmbH. With the “Vohaschlicht” diamond-coating optimized for machining graphite, they bravely tackle even the closest customer tolerances.

The unique material properties of pure, crystalline diamond are an in-exhaustible performance potential, for no other material can withstand high wearing so well and has such a low coefficient of friction as diamond. And that’s why the workpiece material and diamond surface don’t gum up, for example on cutting tools with smooth diamond coatings. In contrast to expensive natural diamonds and to less flexible polycrystalline diamonds (PCD), diamond coatings can be applied to virtually all geometries in uniform layer thicknesses. They are therefore clearly superior with regard to the range of applications and represent the most inexpensive alternative.

Graphite machining with top results

During graphite machining important factors for the tools used include not only the production accuracy for complex geometries, but also the achievable removal rate. The cutting tools used up until now encounter problems, as graphite is an extremely brittle material. As a result, no chips are formed during machining, as no plastic deformation of the material to be cut results. Instead, the flow of fine dust causes major abrasion on the tool, and enormous friction results during the cutting process. Diamond is meanwhile the standard here.

In the case of the tool manufacturer Voha-Tosec Werkzeuge GmbH, which developed a new spherical cutter for a customer for manufacturing graphite electrodes, there was no question – CemeCon was consulted at an early stage.

Werner Röttel, CEO of Voha-Tosec Werkzeuge GmbH explains, “We’ve worked successfully with CemeCon for many years and have already cracked many a hard nut – like this time. The microgeometry of the spherical cutter may be impaired only very little by the coating.”

Because the specification of the carbide and the geometry, as well as the adaptation of the diamond coating to the application, are closely interrelated and are the condition for the success of the project.”
